Kindle Gets Improved Battery Life and PDF Support

Amazon has announced that it has improved the battery life of Kindle when a wireless connection is switched on – just in time for the holidays.

According to the company’s press release, Kindle’s battery life now lasts up to 7 days with the wireless connection on – compared to old one’s 4 days. But, with the wireless turned off, the battery life is just the same.

"Battery power management for portable wireless devices is a complex technical area, and the battery life improvement announced today is the result of a six month firmware improvement and testing program," the release notes.

In the same press release, Amazon also announced that it will now offer native PDF support for its e-book reader. According to Amazon’s press release, you can now "read professional and personal documents in their original PDF format without conversion." To be able to read PDF files, you could either email them to your Kindle email address or transfer them using a USB connection. If you would rather have your PDF documents converted to the Kindle format, simply type "Convert" in the subject of the e-mail when you send the documents to your Kindle address.

Brand new Kindles will be shipped with both improved battery-life and native-PDF support in place. But if you already own one, you may upgrade your old Kindle by having a firmware upgrade that will download automatically to your Kindle when you switch the wireless connection on.
