Sony Reader Daily Edition

Sony recently announced that its flagship ebook reader, the Reader Daily Edition, will have access to more publishers than previously announced as the gadget begins shipping to its first batch of buyers.  The Sony Reader Daily Edition has a seven-inch touchscreen with the ability to read in portrait and landscape settings, as well as a 3G connection via AT&T wireless and enough memory to hold up to 1,000 standard ebooks.

The Sony Reader Daily Edition initially provided access to Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, and Chicago Tribune.  As of today, Sony has confirmed that 16 additional publishers have committed to providing news content to Sony’s Reader Store, where users can download, including New York Post, Boston Globe, International Herald Tribune, San Jose Mercury News, and Christian Science Monitor.  Note that each news provider has a different subscription rate.  The Wall Street Journal, for instance, is available for US$14.99 per month; while the New York Post has a monthly subscription cost of $9.99.

The Sony Reader Daily Edition is available for back-order, with an estimated shipping date of January 15, 2010, for $399.99.
