How many swimmers can say that a video game is made after them? So far, only one.
Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps will be having his own video game entitled “Push the Limit,” which makes use of the Kinect for Xbox 360 instead of a swimming pool. In theory, the game is supposed to teach players proper swimming strokes and join swimming competitions. The better stroke technique you make, the faster you go, with the ultimate goal of beating Phelps himself.
Phelps’ swimming techniques–including dives and even reaching for walls–were captured using high-speed, high-definition cameras, which would make the game all the more accurate.
Although we applaud that a swimming video game is being played without button smashing, we find it weird to “swim” without the kicking aspect and whether that alone would encourage players to actually dip their toes into the pool.
Push the Limit is set to be released in June 2011.
