Apple’s iMac desktop computers are given hardware updates as its latest models feature Intel’s latest i5 and i7 Core CPUs and Thunderbolt I/O.
The base model has a 21.5-inch monitor, 2.5GHz quad-core i5, 4GB of RAM, AMD Radeon HD 6750M, and 500GB disk space. Meanwhile, the 27-inch model has 2.7 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6770M, and 1TB hard drive.
Both models also have Thunderbolt I/O, Intel’s answer to the standard USB technology seen in other PCs. The dual protocol chipset makes both DisplayPort and PCI Express devices to run at the same time because of Thunderbolt’s bidirectional pipeline that can run up to 10Gbps on both upload and download. The Thunderbolt works on the new iMacs through an adapter to make up for their lack of ports.
The new desktops also have Apple’s FaceTime technology, feature a HD webcam and video calling.
Pricing starts at US$1199 for the 21.5-inch iMac, while the 27-incher starts at $1,699. Both models can be shipped today.
