Second-Gen RIBA Robot for Elderly Gets New Upgrades

Japan-based RIKEN has unveiled a new version of its bear-faced RIBA (Robot for Interactive Body Assistance) healthcare robot, which aims to assist care-giving personnel in lifting the elderly from their bed to a wheelchair. The robot was developed in response to Japan’s aging population, which is expected to reach 5.69 million by 2015.

The RIBA-II, developed in collaboration with Tokai Rubber Industries (TRI), can lift a patient that weighs up to 176 pounds (41 pounds more than its predecessor). The new robot also has an array of new sensors that accurately gauge a patient’s weight and carry them more comfortably, as well as some touchscreen controls on the back in case the RIBA-II is in need of directions.

RIKEN and TRI have yet to announce when the RIBA-II will be released in Japan. The two companies also hopes to ship the robots in other countries in need of elderly aid.
