Updated Wii Console No Longer Plays Gamecube Games

Nintendo is about to roll out a revised model of the Wii, just in time for pre-holiday shopping. The streamlined model now sits horizontally instead of vertically like the original. It is also a bit smaller and no long has the ability to play Gamecube games. The tweaked Wii could be the last act for this particular system as Nintendo will move on to its next-gen console Wii U.

Since its launch in November 2006, the Wii has sold over 87 million units, making it the best-selling game console of all time (even outdoing consoles with better graphics like Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3). The Xbox 360 is still trying to outnumber Wii’s sales, especially with the inclusion of its Kinect motion-gaming device.

Hardcore and casual gamers in the United Kingdom would be delighted to know that the updated Wii is now officially available there, and we might have to wait a few weeks more to hit other regions.

Pricing is still a blur, but the new Wii comes with a bundle of games like Wii Party and Wii Sport, as well as a Wii Remote Plus and a Nunchuk.
