With only a few days left before CES 2012 kicks off, LG has teased us with what is in store on their booth: a “world’s largest” OLED panel. LG is set to unveil its 55-inch OLED HDTV panel to public on January 9 before it becomes available by mid-2012.
The device uses white OLEDs (organic light emitting diodes) overlaid with colors, which LG claims resulting to a lower error rate and clearer “ultra definition” screen as it has more colors than standard LCDs. The 55-inch OLED TV panel is said to have no after image due to its high reaction velocity, as well as a contrast ratio of over 100,000:1. It is even constructed to be amazingly thin at 5 millimeters, making it even slimmer than a pen and lighter than LCD panels.
OLED TVs are ideal for the environmentally-conscious since the diodes can be turned off while the unit itself is on, enabling lower power consumption compared to conventional LCD monitors that require its light sources turned on at all times.
Looks like the HDTV battle between LG and Samsung will be quite exciting.
