London’s New Hybrid Double Decker Public Transport Bus

London has long been known for its red double-decker public bus transport. You can even say that it has somewhat become a part of the city’s identity. But it has been 50 years since the buses have been given some much needed updates. Fortunately, the City of London has decided to come up with a new and modern fleet of buses to catch up with the times. And it has recently launched the new Hybrid Double Decker Public Transport Bus that will start plying the streets of the capital.

The New Hybrid Double Decker Public Transport Bus is designed by Thomas Heatherwick and built by Wrightbus. Its design was mainly inspired by the Routemaster bus of the 50’s and given a modern touch. The new bus now comes with three sets of doors, two staircases and with an open platform on the back to help facilitate faster loading and unloading of passengers.

The new hybrid bus comes with a diesel-electric hybrid engine that is 50 percent more fuel efficient than conventional double decker buses. It also allows the bus to emit just half of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide into the air, making it contribute less to air pollution. The new New Hybrid Double Decker Public Transport Bus will start plying selected routes in the city by February of 2012, according to the Transport of London. By May, it is expected that 8 of such buses will be in service in London.
