Amazon proudly announced that its Lending Library service is a success. This free service on Amazon Prime, exclusively available to Kindle users, was launched in November 2011 with just 5,000 independently-published book titles. Over 295,000 people have borrowed e-books from Kindle Direct Publishing in December alone, while the Lending Library has expanded to over 75,000 titles.
To celebrate this feat, Amazon is adding another $200,000 to further fund Direct Publishing authors, pushing the total amount to $700,000.
The Kindle Direct Publishing program allows aspiring authors to post their works on Amazon. Author earns $1.70 for every book borrowed, much more if the book was purchased in the process. Amazon claims that the top ten KDP Select authors have earned over $70,000 on December 2011 alone, including Carolyn McCray, Rachel Yu, and Amber Scott.
