Hitachi, Mitsubishi To Halt Domestic Production of TV, Discs

Hitachi and Mitsubishi have separately announced that they will stop producing parts of their domestic products. Hitachi has said it will end making Wooo plasma and LCD TVs in Japan by September this year, citing price competition in the TV business.

The company has a plant in Gifu prefecture located in Central Japan, which makes about 100,000 TV units every month. The factory will undergo transition into producing projectors and chips instead. However, the company will continue to sell Wooo TVs made from contractors outside Japan.

Meanwhile, Japanese periodical Asahi Shimbun reports that Mitsubishi will stop domestic production of DVDs and Blu-ray discs, the main reason being declining sales of its two categories. Prior to the announcement, the company has been churning these discs from its factories in Singapore and Okayama prefecture in Western Japan. Mitsubishi plans to outsource production of optical discs to partner companies in India and Taiwan.
