Gaming blog Computer and Video Games, citing a Nintendo insider, reports that the company is considering giving the next-gen Wii console a new name. The 100-year-old company is said to be worried whether the name “Wii U” would be a hit and their analyses gear toward the negative. Customers might get a false impression that the Nintendo Wii U would just be an add-on to the current Wii and not a completely revamped system.
This consumer behavior apparently happened with the Nintendo 3DS, which is named after its predecessor, thus forcing the company the spend more time marketing the 3DS brand rather than its unique features.
Nintendo needs a hit console after a less-than-stellar sales of the 3DS, coupled with a net loss of $630 million between during the previous fiscal year. The next-gen Wii is slated for a 2012 release.
