Trendnet Webcams Can be Viewed Publicly Due to Security Bug

Webcam maker Trendnet is alarmed over reports that 26 of its models are vulnerable to a bug that lets anyone take a peek into the video stream using just an IP address. This security flaw was noted since January 2012 and Trendnet has been working to alert its customers and patch the devices. The problem is that the company cannot contact non-registered webcam owners, which keeps their devices vulnerable if they never suspect anything.

The breach can make one creepy individual to watch hundreds of video feeds from the affected webcams, ranging from mundane things such as cameras watching the front door, to more alarming ones like a mother undressing. Trendnet estimates about 50,000 users have been breached.

Although a patch has been provided by Trendnet, many of its webcams are very likely to remain un-updated. Users cannot be alerted directly and and automatic check for updates will likely be dismissed by many of its users due to the “why fix it?” mentality.

The company has put up a list of affect models on its website, as well as a warning to current and potential customers of its webcams.
