The New York Times has reported that Google is bolstering its hardware devices beyond the smartphones and Internet TVs. The tech giant is said to be developing an Android-based glasses that would project augmented reality content right into the wearer’s field of vision. This includes stuff like GPS and even the ability to play and record audio files.
The publication’s sources claim that the glasses come with a built-in camera that helps gather images to its rack computers, which in turn provide AR information to the wearer. For example, a person looking at a local restaurant could also see the establishment’s information and comments left by friends.
The sources also say that it also has facial recognition software, which can be utilized in a number of ways. Spot a person who vaguely looks familiar? Perhaps the glasses could remind you who he is and when you meet him. This functionality can also be tapped for alternate reality game usage, such as hunting for “visible” ghosts or seeing other people playing the same game.
Google has yet to react on this report.
