Release date of BlackBerry Messenger for Android and iOS now confirmed.[1]

After rounds of internal testing[2], the Android and iOS versions of BlackBerry Messenger will be available to the general public over the weekend.

Rumors on when the BlackBerry Messenger app for Android and iOS devices will be released became a tad exciting when Samsung Nigeria revealed a news through its Twitter account that BBM would be available on September 20. Apparently, that released date is a bit off, as BlackBerry itself confirmed that BBM will be available for Android beginning September 21, and for the iPhone a day later.

The company’s latest announcement does not include any mention regarding rumors that Samsung has secured a three-month exclusive deal to have the app available only on its devices. Instead, BlackBerry states that its messaging app will be available for Android smartphones that run on Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean.

Meanwhile, the BlackBerry Messenger app will work compatibly with iPhones running on iOS 6 and iOS 7.

In other news, word on the street is that BlackBerry is planning to layoff a huge chunk of its workforce, up to 40% by the end of the year according to some reports. This would affect several thousand employees.
