Having a wristwatch today may seem redundant for some people. Rather than check the time using their watches, some already use their smartphones for the job. And because of this, there are some people who no longer seem to see the purpose of still using a wristwatch. Well, others see them as a luxurious fashion statement if they are from a signature brand. Other than that, others just want to remember those good old days of knowing what time it is now. But what if you have a wristwatch that might just save your life someday? This is what the Breitling Emergency II wristwatch offers.
The Breitling Emergency II wristwatch is a unique device to have. It may look like a luxurious watch to some (because it is), but it comes with a useful function that may just save the wearer’s life in an emergency. It can send a distress signal to satellites overhead in times when the wearer finds himself in danger or gets lost somewhere.
The Breitling Emergency II wristwatch is considered as the world’s first wristwatch with a dual frequency locator beacon. It is the successor to the first Emergency wristwatch that only sends out a distress signal on the 121.5 MHz analog band, enabling ships and planes to receive and track the signal. The Breitling Emergency II on the other hand not only sends out the same distress signal but also alternates with the new 406MHz digital signal that can be tracked by the COSPAS-SARSAT search and rescue satellites. To trigger the signal, the user needs to turn and pull out a set of long antennas to turn on the emergency broadcast signals for a period of 24 hours. This makes it an ideal wristwatch for those who may find themselves at risk of getting lost or in some kind of danger due to their profession or hobby. But the life-saving function comes at a cost as the Breitling Emergency II costs US$19,000. It may be partly due to the titanium body that the wristwatch comes with for added durability. But then again, that may not seem so costly for someone if it might help save a life someday.
