With its chic 'do and its cool package, that rating would be well-deserved, But as it is, the photos that this camera produces are a little lacking in terms of image quality. Read more »

SatuGo Bouncing Digital Camera
2008-01-29 16:41:58 Section: Digital Cameras
Getting bored with your simple, point-and-shoot camera? Why not try a digital camera that bounces just like a ball when you throw it? The SatuGo, short for "See, Aim, Throw, captUre, Go," gives you a more exciting and fun way to take pictures. The SatuGo is probably the coolest looking gadget we've seen in ages. It is actually a bouncing ball with an eye, just how a Webcamera would look like. Except that this bouncey little thing can be thrown anywhere around, take snapshots in the air, and would bounce right back as it hits the ground.
The SatuGo bouncing camera is about the size of a tennis ball. It automatically takes 3 megapixel images and can also be used as a Web camera or as a data storage device when connected to a computer. It works more like a toy than an actual camera with its unique way of capturing images. It takes images in two easy ways. Simply throw it and as soon as it hits a surface, it would take a cool picture. The other option would be to set the timer so you can take a photo while the SatuGo is high up in the air.
The built-in timer and flash of the SatuGo can be activated when the device is placed in its holder. The red or black rubber part of the ball can be pressed to the specific interval that you would want the camera to take a picture. This allows you to shoot subjects that are usually not within normal distance. For example, you can set the timer to take an image from a bird's height or just before it bounces off a surface. You can easily achieve pretty images at varied angles. Now how cool is that? Read more »

Canon EOS 400D Digital Rebel XTi Digital Camera
2008-01-03 02:08:26 Section: Digital Cameras
The new Canon EOS 400D or Rebel XTi digital SLR is the younger brother of the EOS 350D Rebel XT. The 400D was announced way back in August 2006 and it has a lot of new features that would make photo enthusiasts want to give it a try themselves.
Some photographers will be delighted to know that there is a larger 2.5 inch LCD screen in the 400D. It also incorporates Canon's Picture Styles. Because the 400D came after the 30D, many people expected that it would include the same sensor as the 30D. However, Canon made an unexpected move and utilized a brand new 10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor for the 400D. This makes it Canon's highest resolution DSLR with an EF-S lens mount.
Some of the bad points for the camera is that the resolution from the 350D isn't that big. The anti-dust feature isn't 100% infallible and there is no anti-shake in the standard kit. Another thing regarding this is that the Sony Alpha A100 poses a big threat to this. The camera shows a lot of promise and will most probably continue to be a best-seller for those photographers on a budget. Read more »

2007-12-27 07:53:15 Section: Digital Cameras
One of the newest releases in Canon's Powershot series is the Canon Powershot SD870 IS. It came out the second half of 2007 and debuted a little over a couple of months after its predecessor. This new release by Canon can capture photos up to a whopping 8 megapixels-big enough to rival the prosumer digital SLRs that are out today.
One of the best features that you'll get to see in this new point-and-shoot camera is the humongous 3-inch LCD screen. It has a wider zoom lens which also has the famous face detection system to recognize up to 35 faces at a time from various types of angles.
One of the recognizable omissions is an optical viewfinder but it more than compensates for that with its large LCD display which acts as a live view window. This new release is definitely much more stylish that the older Powershots so you'd best pick this one up when you have the time. You won't regret the envious looks you'll get when you whip this out. Ricoh Caplio GX100 Digital Camera
2007-10-09 17:21:21 Section: Digital Cameras
Ricoh Company, Ltd. is one of the largest copier manufacturers in the world. But the company is not only known for office equipments but the company was founded in 1936 also as a maker of cameras. Then it was film SLRs, today they produce a complete line of digital compact cameras dedicated for beginners to high end models intended for serious hobbyists.
Ricoh cameras are probably among the cameras today that are often underrated. Most people who are out in the market today for digital compacts find brands like Nikon, Canon, and Sony as more appealing. However, you should know that Ricoh is a pretty good company and they produce quite a number of digital cameras that can compete with the top rollers in the industry.
The Ricoh Caplio GX100, for example, was announced as successor to the GX8 and it actually belongs to the high end digital compact market. Among its direct competitors are Panasonic FX100 with 12Mp, 3x optical zoom and Leica lens, and the D-Lux 3 of Leica which has 10Mp and a 4x optical zoom. Admittedly, Ricoh can't really compete with the D-Lux3. Owning a Leica is pretty damn different, the prestige alone and the ego that comes with it can kill you. Read more »

Panasonic's Lumix DMC-L-10 Digital Camera
2007-09-25 16:13:15 Section: Digital Cameras
I like dark horses, or the underdogs if you will. In a highly competitive industry like digital SLR cameras, the mainstream producers have been narrowed down to really two major companies: Nikon and Canon. These two companies have such a large share in the digital SLR camera market that when you look at the gap of the nearest competitor, you get this feeling that despite efforts of other manufacturers catching up to the two leaders is next to impossible, or is it?
Panasonic has recently announced its second digital SLR, the Lumix DMC-L10. The new camera sports a 10MP Live MOS sensor and a lot of new features like a fully articulated screen and live view with sensor-based auto focus.
Panasonic lies 10th place in the digital camera market. But their decision to enter the digital SLR camera race two years ago has sure intensified the competition among manufacturers. Matsushita Electric Industrial, maker of Panasonic, and Olympus banded together in 2005 to develop a new digital SLR camera targeting amateurs and professional photographers. Read more »

Nikon D300 Digital SRL Camera
2007-09-17 17:26:35 Section: Digital Cameras
This has been rumored quite a while. After the release of Nikon D80 more than a year ago, I've been hearing of a camera on the way that would soon replace the already pro-level Nikon D200. The rumors and speculations eventually grew stronger and before we know it, Nikon has revealed last August 2007 the all new D300.
Packed with features, almost everything from the Nikon D200 was upgraded. This comes to no surprise, however, since the Nikon D200 was first announced on November 2005 and over the past two years new technologies have already replaced the foundations that built digital SLR systems a few years back.
The upgrades in the D300, as was mentioned, were considerable. The new DSL now has 12.3 effective megapixel compared to the 10.2 million effective pixel CCD of its predecessor. It is also equipped with Nikon's Expeed Image Processing System giving emphasis to the speed and processing power that most digital cameras deed today. Read more »

Canon EOS 40D Digital Camera
2007-09-11 17:25:03 Section: Digital Cameras
In the tradition of Canon digital SLRs, the SLR giant maker recently released the latest camera for its prosumer line. The EOS 40D becomes the sixth 'prosumer' digital SLR from Canon.
The first prosumer DSLR released by Canon was the EOS D30 in April 2000 at 3.1 MP. The company then released EOS D60 in Feb 2002 at 6.3MP, followed by EOS 10D in Feb 2003 at 6.3 MP, and then EOS 20D in Aug 2004 at 8.2MP, and finally EOS 30D only eighteen months ago which also has 8.2MP.
When you first look at it, the new EOS has very few upgrades from its 30D predecessor. However, analyze the specifications and components closely and you will find that the changes in 40D despite its subtleness are quite ingenious and creates a strong EOS body. Read more »

The Story of Sony and its Alpha
2007-09-08 09:40:14 Section: Digital Cameras
Early 2006 was marked with press releases and news stories of Konica Minolta closing its doors and selling its assets in the single-lens-reflex (SLR) and digital camera business to Sony Corp. Less than three months after the announcement, Konica Minolta officially closed its doors and handed over the keys of its SLR camera manufacturing unit to Sony.
After they took over, Sony jumped immediately on the digital SLR bandwagon releasing on June 2006 its first digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera, the α (Alpha) DSLR-A100 system. The system combines the previous concepts Konica Minolta had on its digital cameras like the anti-shake system found in the Konica Minolta Maxxum/Dynax 5D and 7D with Sony's various innovations on digital.
The first Sony Alpha came out packed with features. It has a 10.2-megapixel APS CCD image sensor which was the highest available in its class when it was released. At the same time, Sony introduced 19 high-quality Sony lenses and assures consumers that the camera is compatible with most of the former Konica-Minolta Maxxum® mount lenses. Read more »

Canon EOS 1-D Mark III
2007-07-24 14:30:06 Section: Digital Cameras
Following off their success with the EOS-1D Mark II, Canon has released the Canon EOS-1D Mark III. This is another milestone for Canon as it has a new "Dual DIGIC III" imaging processor. This gives this new professional digital camera an edge because of the new processing power that it has.
It also has an "integrated cleaning system" included in it and its shutter cycle has been upgraded to 300,000 shutter clicks. It has several other improvements that will definitely catch the eye of amateur and professionals alike. The Mark III is definitely both eye candy and a technical marvel for photographers of all walks.
The Mark III, as mentioned earlier, has a Dual DIGIC III Imaging Processor which gives the photographer excellent resolution. It enables the high resolution of the 10.1 megapixel of the camera.
All of these technologies combine to work with a more improved buffer capacity to effectively deliver a maximum of 110 frame bursts of JPEG quality pictures and 30 frame bursts of RAW quality. This is also complemented with the astounding 10 frames per second rate of the shutter. This is quite excellent for those who dabble in sports photography or for those who would like to capture that perfect moment just right when they see it. This type of frame rate is quite important for those who want to capture the right emotion at the right time.
Another feature of this photographic marvel is the high ISO sensitivity that it has. Aside from reproducing life-like colors, the Mark III also has a high light sensitivity which peaks at ISO 3200. This is even adjustable to the lowest ISO which is ISO 50 and can be cranked all the way up to an amazing ISO 6400.
Knowing how Canon has mastered the high ISO and low grain/noise equation, this is a great thing for those photographers who need to capture an important yet discreet moment without flash. This particular technology is also partly due to the DIGIC III imaging processor that can effectively work for all shooting conditions as well as bulb setting exposures.
The processor also works well to reduce the different false color and moiré effects that one gets whenever the shooting conditions or angles are not optimal. Infrared filters that are found in the camera setting also reduce fringes of red as well as specific color casts. Read more »
