Electric vehicles are destined to be the future mode of transportation because they use cleaner energy and can be a great help in reviving an already polluted environment. But with such vehicles getting more and more accepted, there may need to be some changes in the way they obtain power. In the future, gas stations may give way to electric charging stations where EV’s can charge up in order to run.

In order to pave the way for such changes, GE has devised an innovative way on how future EV’s may charge itself with electric power. They have come up with the GE WattStation as a convenient electric vehicle (EV) charger that may help accelerate the4 adoption of plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) into the community. The GE WattStation employs smart grid technology that may someday help utility companies better manage and handle the impact of EV’s on a particular grid’s electrical supply.

The GE WattStation is designed for faster charging. It is designed to decrease charging time of EV’s from the usual 12-18 hours to the more convenient 4-8 hours. The GE WattStation is expected to be commercially available for use around the world by 2011although a specialized home may already be made available within the year. There’s no word yet on how much it would cost though.
