Cardboard AppVirtual reality technology has been with us for more than a decade or so. Early ideas tend to be simplistic and not that appealing for many people. But the idea truly has potential. It is only now that VR recently came back into the limelight with the introduction of devices such as the Oculus Rift and emerging VR devices. Even Google is getting into the VR fray. Sensing that the market is ripe for the technology, Google is pushing for its lineup of VR apps that are now available at Google Play.

While you could say that VR tech may still be considered at its infancy despite its decades long existence, Google is trying to push the envelope by trying to offer added room for development in terms of offering VR apps for use with its Android smartphones. First, it introduced the Cardboard app through Google Play. Google also provided instructions on how create a DIY virtual reality goggles for your Android smartphone. But it is taking things even further.

In order to spread the development of VR tech, Google has now made the SDK for Google Cardboard available for download to interested parties who wish to develop VR apps. While virtual reality tech is showing big potential in the field of gaming, other fields may also benefit from it. Pitches for uses in tourism and holding virtual concerts come into mind.

Currently, there are a handful of VR apps available at Google Play store. Although they are developed for fun as early VR demos, it may be the first step where VR may take off in the near future.
