Hanx Writer

As someone who learned how to use a typewriter in school, I sometimes miss the clickity-clackity sound of keys smashing while typing in a computer. Multi-awarded actor Tom Hanks, who also happens to be a typewriter collector, wants to share that seemingly calm feeling whenever he types snail-mail letters and thank-you notes on manual typewriters. Hence, he hooked up with the maker of The Harlem Shake app and created Hanx Writer, a typewriter simulator for the iPad.

Since its launch last week, the iPad app has dominated the App Store, reaching no. 1 among free apps and boasting a 4.5-star rating based on over 1,300 customer reviews.

The Hanx Writer replicates all the noises associated with the typewriter, from the clicking of keys to the chiming as you reach the end of a line. Like all typewriters, this word processor app comes with a single font, although you can unlock more typefaces and other typewriter feature with in-app purchases.

In a Twitter Q&A with Apple’s official @Appstore account, Hanks admits that while the Hanx Writer might not be ideal for “a term paper or legal brief,” he says he hopes the app would be used for everything “that you want to have stick around a bit.”

Now they really need to have Hanx Writer on Android (and on Amazon, please) and I’m gonna download it in a heartbeat.
