We have reported about rumors that Apple plans on stealing Google’s thunder with its own wearable display and apparently cash-strapped Olympus already went ahead with its own similar prototype, which the company has been developing since 2005.

There are stark differences with Google’s Project Glass and the MEG4.0 from Olympus. For one, the latter is not a standalone structure and requires a glasses frame to make it wearable. Its QVGA display can connect to other devices via Bluetooth 2.1, with a possibility of hooking up with certain smartphones for processing and or Internet connectivity.

Olympus’ current prototype can run on its own for up to eight hours of intermittent use, or two hours if used non-stop. The company has no word on when the MEG4.0 will be formally released.
