The next social media buzz word: Groufie

You've heard of selfie. Now, you can add 'groufie' to your repertoire of social media jargon.

Groufie - a group selfie - is the catch phrase coined by China's Huawei Technologies - the world's third-largest smartphone manufacturer.

And, Huawei is banking on groufies to drive sales of its latest flagship smartphone - the Ascend P7 - launched in Paris on Wednesday.

The Android device includes a 5-inch screen and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera - a much higher resolution than competitors - that comes with a panoramic mode for capturing more people in a single frame. The typical resolution for front-facing cameras is 1-2 megapixels.

"Social media is so important-we need to let people see the difference" that Huawei phones offer, Shao Yang, vice president of marketing for Huawei's device division told the Wall Street Journal.

Huawei recently filed to trademark the term, the Journal said.

The craze for groufies has picked up following Ellen DeGeneres' star-studded group snap at the Oscars in March - which became the most retweeted photograph of all time.

Tom Kang, research director at Counterpoint Research says while the phone's group selfie feature is more of a marketing tool - the phone boasts impressive specifications including its high resolution front and rear cameras, high quality display as well as a competitive price point.

"It looks like Huawei is following the trend that Xiamoi started - loading high quality hardware at an attractive price point," he said.

The phone is priced at 449 euros ($625) - well below the likes of Apple's and Samsung's flagship phones. The iPhone 5S starts at 699 euros in Germany and 709 euros in France. While, Samsung's Galaxy S5 costs between 580 and 680 euros in major European markets.

The latest offering could help Huawei cement its position as the world's number three smartphone maker, Kang noted, behind Samsung and Apple.

Huawei currently holds a 4.9 percent share of the global smartphone market - a touch ahead of Asian competitors Lenovo and LG, which hold a 4.6 percent and 4.4 percent shares, respectively.
